Banning of Unhealthy Food Choices

Many people may think they know what obesity is, but they have no idea. It is being overweight, but by how much? What are the associated diseases? According to a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it shows that among adults aged 20-74 years the prevalence of obesity has increased from 15.0% to 32.9% in the last 15 years. This age group houses the majority of college students.

The amount of college students becoming obese is constantly increasing. This is not just a problem happening in Fort Myers, Florida. It is a problem happening throughout the nation. One university has taken a stand. FGCU’s Student Senate has voted “NO” to placing a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) on campus because of the unhealthy food choices they offer and its inhumane treatment of chickens. You can read more here. Thanks to the 525 signatures and the 14-2 vote, students on campus will not be given another unhealthy fast food selection.

With FGCU being the first college to reject KFC, this can be the example for other colleges to do the same in not allowing one too many unhealthy food choices on campus. With this attitude, many colleges can stop contributing to the obesity problem in America and start to solve this epidemic by encouraging students to live a healthier lifestyle. At this moment, some students may not appreciate banning KFC or any other unhealthy fast food restaurant on campus, but in the long run their gut will be thankful.

I believe this is the wave of the future. Fast food restaurants do not belong on college campuses or high schools.

Obesity kills more Americans than cancer. Read more at rightsizing.blogspot.com.

I think its pretty cool that FGCU was the first college to reject KFC because of the cruelty issues. Its one of the good things we can be known for, however, few people will remember it.
